What if YARD became a portal for sanctuary?

*”The times are urgent; let us slow down… The times are urgent; let us make sanctuary.”

As capitalism hurtles us through more violence, more catastrophe, more collapse, how can we create spaces which offer refuge from these systems of violence? How can we slow down and reorient our relationship to ourselves, the people and the land around us? How can we build sanctuaries?

As part of our Radical Imagination Lab: Space in the Black Imagination, MAIA is offering four pots of £500 funding for Black organisations, groups or individuals to takeover YARD for a day and deliver events which respond to the provocation: What if YARD became a portal for sanctuary?

We're looking for intimate events, where art and culture play a role in imagining YARD as a sanctuary. As a guide, these takeovers might include film screenings, workshops, community conversations, a crit or games night.

Successful applicants will be given the keys to YARD for a day between 3rd - 7th July to deliver their proposal.

You can respond to the provocation in whatever way feels most aligned with your spirit and practice, though please apply with a project that falls within the parameters of a £500 commission, and bear in mind that YARD can accommodate a maximum of 30 people. Unfortunately, YARD is not wheelchair accessible, due to us not having an accessible toilet downstairs.

Please also be consider that YARD is situated in a residential area, so activities need to be mindful of neighbours and noise-levels.
